This movie series is not so much entertainment as an institution. With 18 sequels in its wake, Troublesome Night has featured some of Hong Kong's most well known actors including Law Lan, the most famous ghostly granny in Asian cinema.
What really is a horror comedy anthology of spooky stories gets lazily tied together as interconnected stories - with the hauntings traveling from one character to another. While lacking the action hijinks of the jiangshi movies, the Troublesome Night series is rich in madcap Hong Kong humor, with the cacophonous city as a refreshing modern (back in the day) backdrop.

A former cop rejoins the police department to investigate a drug ring that employs ghosts and vampires.
Director: Wei Tung | Stars: Ching-Ying Lam, Wilson Lam, Kiu Wai Miu, Mei-Wah Wong
Votes: 558
<Magic Cop> Lam Ching Ying returns, as a policeman imbued with an expertise in Taoist magic, to - you guessed it - fight evil.
Basically a modern incarnation of his famous monobrowed priest character, Lam takes a break from beating on hopping zombies, to combat black magic and necromancy on the Hong Kong mainland. By this time, the jiangshi sub-genre was near its peak, as filmmakers started moving their movies away from the period setting into the present. Hong Kong film fans will also notice Wu Ma, another mainstay of the action comedy genre.

After a string of bad luck, a debt collector has no other choice than to spend the night in a haunted temple, where he encounters a ravishing female ghost and later battles to save her soul from the control of a wicked tree demon.
Director: Siu-Tung Ching | Stars: Leslie Cheung, Joey Wang, Wu Ma, Wai Lam
Votes: 10,004
Thanks to this movie, its subsequent sequels and remakes, A Chinese Ghost Story is doubtlessly the most well known Asian ghost story (amongst Chinese audiences). Its success also popularized its characters into archetypes; the bumbling scholar, the beautiful female spirit, the demon king and the warrior priest were referenced, parodied and plagiarised endlessly in other works.
Much of the film's appeal also lay in the strength of its cast - Leslie Cheung and Joey Wong were both in their prime as they played the lead roles, bringing a touch of class to a genre more well known for its action and buffoonery, than the good looks of its actors.

A cast of new faces and old favorites to take on ghostbusting in a film full of both laughs and thrills.
Director: Jeffrey Lau | Stars: Stephen Chow, Karen Mok, Yat-Fei Wong, Kin-Yan Lee
Votes: 2,438
The only horror comedy Stephen Chow's ever done, Out of the Dark has a reputation for being Chow's goriest and most violent. Playing a mental patient named Leo, who is an obvious dig at Luc Besson's Leon, he teams up with a girl (Karen Mok) and a group a security guards (played by Stephen Chow movie regulars) to solve the vicious hauntings in an apartment building.
The film is unique because it also features Chow's trademark mo-lei-tau (nonsense) comedy in the horror film setting. The combination of visceral horror and cognitively dissonant humor makes for a lively and energetic viewing.
86 min | Action, Comedy, Horror
A priest discovers that the water supply in his village has been contaminated by bats, and while in the process of digging a well to find new water supply, he inadvertently unearths the corpse of an evil Western priest.
Director: Ching-Ying Lam | Stars: Ching-Ying Lam, Siu-Ho Chin, Fong Lui, Maria Cordero
Votes: 440
<Vampire vs. Vampire> Lam Ching Ying directed and starred in this film, of which the Chinese title actually reads "one-eyebrow priest". The popularity of his character was at its zenith here, as the movie resolves the contradiction between Chinese hopping vampires and European zombies in the most sensible way possible: pitting the two against each other.
A cute little hopping child vampire/zombie is enlisted in the fight against the Dracula-esque european vampire that has made his a home in a small local church inhabited by nuns. The battle of oriental magic against a Western invader of the supernatural kind makes for great action and entertainment, with a liberal number of things going boom.

Two magically powerful monks are sent on a quest to fight the King of Hell.
Directors: Ngai Choi Lam, Biao Yuen | Stars: Biao Yuen, Hiroshi Mikami, Narumi Yasuda, Gloria Yip
Votes: 358
<Peacock King> Starring and co-directed by Yuen Biao, junior to Sammo Hung and Jackie Chan, Peacock King was a lavish joint production between Japan and Hong Kong. Its relatively high budget went into its special effects, some of which still looks pretty good by today's standards.
Although the movie can be a bit uneven on the whole, it still has the trademark goofball comedy vibe, sharply punctuated by tightly choreographed action. Based of the manga of the same name, the movie tells the story of two monks separated at birth, who have to use their magic powers to defeat a demon lord to save the world. Over the top? Yes. Awesome? You bet.
